2019-2020 Class Descriptions

 

TAP 

The Tap Technique Class concentrates on developing the intricate patterns and rhythms of tap. Class consists of warm-up, center work, and across the floor training. Proper terminology and musicality is stressed. Students will learn a variety of Tap styles from Classic Tap to Broadway to Rhythm Tap. Exercises will focus on building flexibility of the knees and ankles, coordination, and speed of movement. The class emphasis is on developing proper Tap technique, producing clear sounds, and having fun.

BALLET

Ballet classes are offered from a beginner to advanced level.  Students are taught proper body placement, body alignment, barre and center floor work, along with across the floor combinations. Beginner classes introduce vocabulary, proper alignment, and classical ballet technique.  Advanced classes include adagio and allegro work, and combinations using balance, strength, and style.  All students are urged to study ballet, as it is the foundation of all other dance styles and facilitates further success in these disciplines.

JAZZ Technique 

The Jazz Technique Class offers the opportunity for students to begin to develop student's flexibility and balance skills. Jazz class will focus on learning proper dance technique such as isolations of the body, improving performance quality and developing complex rhythms and patterns. Students will be exposed to various styles of Jazz such as Broadway, Street and Contemporary to help develop a well rounded dancer. Class curriculum is based on Ballet technique layered with traditional Jazz movement and includes a proper warm-up, across-the-floor progressions, and combinations

HIP HOP

Learn the fundamental Hip Hop moves including basic body isolations, precision, performance quality and choreography.  Hip-hop dance refers to street dance styles primarily performed to hip-hop music or that have evolved as part of hip-hop culture. Hip Hop is a high-energy class that infuses the latest styles of street dancing, breaking, popping, and locking. Classes will encourage students to step outside of the box by bringing their own individual style and personality to the movements. Hip Hop dance requires students to have the strength and stamina. Therefore, class includes upper and lower body conditioning as well as a rigorous warm-up to help prepare students for more intense movements.

ACROBATICS

Tumbling classes are offered from a beginner to advanced level.  Tumbling and Acro for dancers is a great way to build strength and balance.  Skills are taught by certified instructors on an individual level so each student is safe.  Students will stretch during each class to gain flexibility and will work on conditioning to build their core strength.

Tumbling classes do not participate in our Spring Production.  Tumbling classes are for learning technique, building strength and improving flexibility.  We will invite Parents in for Observation Weeks at least two times during the season.

CONTEMPORARY/LYRICAL  

Contemporary/Lyrical is a class concept that offers the student a chance to explore the expressive technique of Contemporary/Lyrical. Contemporary dance is a style of expressive dance that combines elements of several dance genres including modern, jazz, lyrical and classical ballet. Students will strive to connect the mind and the body through fluid dance movements.

MUSICAL THEATRE  

Let us prepare your "triple threat" for their stage debut!!  Musical Theatre is a high-energy "Broadway" style jazz and tap combination class.  The Tap portion of the class will concentrate on developing intricate patterns and rhythms, while the Jazz portion of class will begin to develop student's flexibility and balance skills.  During the season, students will experience dance, acting and vocal performance and will explore the amazing history of Broadway.

PRE-POINTE / POINTE​ 

Pointe is the study of ballet while wearing blocked satin shoes that allow the dancer to raise the body onto the tips of the toes.  Dancers must also be currently studying ballet and have permission from the instructor.  Students are required to have proper spine alignment, ankle strength, proper foot-pointing technique, ability to hold turn-out from the hips, a well-elevated releve on demi pointe with straight knees, and correct distribution of body weight both on two legs and on one leg. Students also require the emotional maturity level necessary for hard work and commitment that pointe entails.

Pre-Pointe and Pointe will include exercises in demi pointe to strengthen calf muscles, ankles, and arches of the feet.  Exercises will begin at the barre for safety and stability. Students will progress to exercises in the centre to practice their balance and increase their strength.

PRESCHOOL - TAP/BALLET/TUMBLE (Ages 2 1/2 - 4)​

Tap/Ballet/Tumble begins to teach the fundamentals of dance and tumbling to boys and girls ages 2 1/2-4.  This class will introduce young dancers to the joys of rhythmic movement and the elegance and grace of ballet in a fun and creative way.  Age appropriate work is taught in all disciplines each week and includes balance, coordination, creative movement, self esteem skills, confidence skills, listening skills, and basic dance and tumbling skills.

Boys Only Hip Hop​

The Boys Only Hip Hop class is designed to allow boys to begin exploring the fundamentals of hip hop dance as an art.  Open to all levels of dance experience and ability, this class focus on dance technique and choreography. Performance opportunities allow for the development of individual ideas increasing confidence and team work. Participants focus on increasing strength, fitness, and flexibility as well as exploring musicality and space.   Have fun and learn the latest hip hop moves in an age appropriate, fun and challenging format... just for boys!

Boys Only Technique 101​

The Boys Only Technique 101 class promotes the knowledge and practice of ballet, contemporary and Jazz technique, with an emphasis on proper alignment, coordination and athleticism. While the basic syllabus is the same for beginning male and female students, the contrast between male and female dancing is increasingly emphasized as a student progresses.
